Meeting Update - December 2019

In October we are hosted an open meeting inviting non-members and families to attend a “Tour of the Universe” presented by astronomer Pete Quin (Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and British Interplanetary Society).  Pete guided us from the Big Bang, through the formation of galaxies and planets up to the latest discoveries. He described how the Egyptians and Mayans understood the night sky long before the Europeans, such as Bath based astronomy heroine Caroline Herschel who discovered many comets and was the first female scientist to receive a salary. We learned many things including the speed of light (186,000 miles per second) and how to find the Andromeda galaxy with the naked eye.
