Annual Report - 2018

It wasn’t without trepidation that a nervous band of WI newbies took on the role of running the WI for Dyrham and Hinton

It was a very steep learning curve but together we committed to taking up the baton. We have been pleased that over the year the membership is now at 30 members.

During the year we have had two national foci Mental health and the anniversary of Suffragette movement. On reflection these two themes have threaded through our programme and shaped the activities and the group this year.

We have learnt to paint, some of us better than others“art is a passion rather than a talent!”

We learned from Dr Jen Heath, about food and how we can avoid eating too much or too little of it. And then as Spring arrived at last, as the hall was filled with the scent of hyacinths and colours of spring flowers we have learnt to make floral bouquets (it amazing what you can do with supermarket flowers! In May we revisited Mental Health and then enjoyed some fiercely competitive quizzing

During the summer we enjoyed the wonders of the countryside in a walk and a delightful summer party hosted so graciously by Marie France in her beautiful garden.

To celebrate the anniversary of suffrage we have made paper rosettes and cards and moved to more serious considerations around the plight of suffragette in Horfield prison.

Recently we heard about the many, many, many japes of a local price dog handler.

In addition - On a dreary March morning we ran our first pop up café and the smell of bacon butties filled the hall. Although the weather wasn’t great we served up a great morning of fantastic crafts and a bustling café. Members kindly donated delicious cakes that the table was groaning and more than one person had an extra slice!  It was a lovely morning with a great atmosphere and we were delighted to make £250 profit. Not bad for two hours on a rainy Saturday A huge thankyou to everyone for all your help and support – as one of the ladies in the kitchen reminded us it was International women’s week

The WI has this year succeeded in providing us all with friendship, support, laughter, a chance to have a go at all sorts of different activities and lots of fun. Next year we can all look forward to doing it again! – the 2019 programme is out today.

Finally I want to thank you for your commitment and to the committee and our president, Sharon, that have supported the continuation of this WI.

As we near the end of the year with themes I am reminded of the mantra I sent you

“Here’s to strong women, may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.”
